When is it time to unplug?

This entry was posted on November 20, 2013

I’ve been drip fed information on unplugging from our technology focused world, but I’ve resisted every step of the way. Please don’t expect me to ever say I’ve moved to a hut in the woods with no wifi, I love being a part of a technology world and I couldn’t be more grateful for it, it makes my life easier, more fun and more full of love than it would be otherwise.

With that said, some of the ‘unplug’ information stuck in my mind, how the increasing light levels at night time can influence us to stay awake longer than we naturally would and sometimes influence our sleep. That there were mothers who took their child’s phone off them at a certain time every evening and I got thinking, would I be more productive, more emotionally present, more energetic if I unplugged earlier in the evening?

I was in the habit of keeping my phone by my bed and checking it before I fell asleep and immediately on waking (partly because it is also my alarm clock, partly because I’ve been so busy these past few months that I had to schedule my Reiki and Psychic Reading appointments when I wasn’t working which meant very late or very early).

Last night I promised to do a week long experiment where I stopped using my phone in bed. Simple rule. A rule like I won’t check my phone after 9pm wouldn’t work for me because I often don’t finish work until then anyway. So I needed a rule that was zone focused rather than time focused. My rule was I’d only check facebook, email, text before I got into bed.

Results, I read for the first time in months (only a couple of pages, but still) I fell asleep very easily, slept great and woke up feeling more energised than I have done in months. So far I think this experiment is going to have a wonderful impact. Plus because my iphone is my alarm clock, I had to actually get out of bed to turn it off. Ideal!

So whether you’re happily addicted to technology, can’t stand it or like me are trying to find the right balance for you, maybe you’d benefit from doing a little experiment yourself? Share your thoughts below,xx
